MAKE EXTRA MONEY FROM THE COMFORT OF YOUR COMPUTER 5 PROVEN METHODS FOR MAKING AN EXTRA INCOME ONLINE Irvine, CA Tax season a time to recover the fortune that was spent over the holidays, or a time to drain what's left and pay off the government? But does it matter the season? Do you ever have enough extra money? Often times the answer to this question is no. Earning extra money usually takes the form of a part-time job on top of a current career; sacrificing time with friends, family or even, time to eat and sleep. However, with the digital age come new opportunities and new income possibilities. According to Yanik Silver and Robert Olic, authors of Moonlighting on the Internet (Entrepreneur Press, Jan 2008), the World Wide Web makes it possible to earn an extra paycheck each month and still keep your in life balance. Silver explains, "We are truly living in the best time ever for everyday people to moonlight online. All you need is a computer, an internet connection, motivation, and the right know-how. The internet has changed everything, from the way we order pizza to the way we file our taxes to the way we find our mates, and in the process, created an exciting new world of opportunities for ways to make money." In their book, Silver and Olic present five practicing online-moonlighters and outline five proven methods for starting a successful online endeavor and eventually a "perfect money-making machine." Here they are in brief: Method #1: Selling Digitally Delivered Information. Digitally delivered information is exactly what it sounds like information that is delivered in an electronic format. This method, in short, is simply taking information that you have and putting it into an online format you can sell. Formats for this include e-books, membership sites, newsletters, directories, audio files, online learning programs, templates/tools the list goes on. In his book, Silver offers the example of his wife's business, instantthankyouletters.com. This information-selling site is a website that sells a variety of ready-to-go thank you letters simple everyday information packaged online offering a quick, convenient solution and successfully selling at the reasonable price of $14.95. Method #2: eBay. Online auction businesses are a proven way to make extra money. It's as simple as finding the right product and setting up business on the right web site. "The most important thing is that you have to decide whether you want to have an eBay business or an eBay hobby. If you want an eBay hobby, go to garage sales. If you like it and it's fun, that's cool but it's not a business. Just keep in mind that someone's trash could be valuable merchandise to you. It could bring in money," explains Silver and Olic. Serious online auctioneers can create a respectable second income and a respectable business. Silver and Olic advise those who want a real business in this to go through all of the steps to properly set up, including forming a legal entity such as a corporation, getting a business license, etc.. Method #3: Affiliate Programs. Defined as commission selling for online merchants, affiliate marketing, in the most basic scenario, is this: An online merchant gives an affiliate, a link to be posted on their web site. The link is coded with a number that is assigned to the affiliate, so when a person clicks on the link, visits the merchant's site, and makes a purchase, the affiliate gets a percentage of the sale and a commission check. According to Silver and Olic, there are many ways to apply this method, but the basic idea is to become an affiliate and therefore get paid for the referrals to a merchandising partner, or more specifically the click that leads to the sale. Method #4: Yahoo! Stores and E-Commerce Stores. Simply put, this business involves opening an online store using Yahoo! Stores or another online outlet as a shopping portal and purchasing products to be sold in the online store, which can be "drop-shipped" directly to any buyer through the product manufacturer or wholesaler. The key here is the term "drop-ship," which is a term used when a manufacturer sends a product directly to the customer. With drop-shipping there is no inventory or storage required because the fulfillment is done by the manufacturer, so all that is needed to open an online store is a shopping portal such as those mentioned above and a manufactured product that will sell and attract customers to your store. Experienced owner and operator of several online stores and author of Online Store Profits and Stomping the Search Engine, Andy Jenkins explains, "We can have all the benefits of owning our own retail stores in the largest mall on the planet with virtually zero risk. That means no rent or long-term leases, no employees, no utilities, no property insurance, etc, yet we keep all of the profit potential!" Method #5: Blogging. This new trend lends itself to be a hobby or if taken seriously a way to make money. By picking the "what," essentially the blog topic, and the "where," the blog platform, and creating the proper strategy behind it inclusive of style of posts, blog design, domain names, etc., online entrepreneurs can create the perfect medium for generating direct or indirect income:
- Direct income: earnings are earned directly from a blog and include different types of advertising, sponsorships, affiliate programs, merchandise the list goes on.
- Indirect income: money earned because of the blog; this includes consulting (i.e. request for your expertise on your blog topic), offline and online writing gigs and speaking opportunities.
The ideas are simple and according to Yanik are proven to work The five methods are outlined in detail in Silver and Olic's online business book, Moonlighting on the Internet.
